The Swanage School will be a locally accountable academy run along cooperative principles.
Our school will be run by the principal and staff, guided by the Governing Body, who will be overseen by a Trust. Our trust, Education Swanage, is a cooperative trust, which means anyone can be a member for a £1 annual fee if they agree to the trust’s values.
Members of the Trust appoint the majority of Governors, who have an overall responsibility for the school. The Governing Body will also contain the Principal and two Staff Governors, and at least two Parent Governors. Governors are subject to criminal record and due diligence checks and are also the DIRECTORS of the Trust. All posts last four years, and if Governors want to serve again they must stand for re-election.
The Governing Body welcomes input from the wider community and will also take advice from a Student Forum, which will have members appointed by the students. By adopting cooperative principles of openness and democracy, Education Swanage seeks to make the Trust as locally accountable as possible and to embed The Swanage School in the heart of the community.
Does The Swanage School have charitable status?
Yes, it does.
Like many schools, academies and universities, The Swanage School is an ‘exempt’ charity – one that does not need to register with the Charity Commission but otherwise enjoys all the benefits of a charity and is subject to all charitable laws and regulations.
More information on the charitable status of academies is available on the Charity Commission website here.
