A Human Scale School
The Swanage School will cater for 420 students, with 84 in each house, in four teaching groups of 21 in each year group.
The quality of teaching is more important than class size, but being 'human scale’ also means we can place relationships at the heart of our organisation.
We will build a friendly and respectful environment where students are well known to all the staff as well as each other, ensuring that strengths are celebrated and allowed to flourish and difficulties identified and swiftly acted upon whenever they occur.
We are developing our school in conjunction with the charity Human Scale Education, who are providing examples of best practice for human scale teaching and who bring with them a network of similar schools in the UK and abroad.
Secondary Schools in England
There are around 2850 secondary schools in England
- 1 in 3 has no sixth form
- The average size of secondary school is 854
- The average size of secondary including sixth form is 1145

Small schools
There are lots of small secondary schools - around 150 have under 500 pupils at the last count - but many of these are small by default; they are actually big schools that parents are avoiding. On the other hand, small schools that were set up to be small schools in most cases are thriving. If we exclude empty big schools, special schools and selective grammars there are around 36 schools of under 500 students in England and 24 schools with 420 students or fewer.
Of the 36, eight are rated Outstanding by Ofsted, 15 are Good, 11 are Satisfactory and two are Inadequate. This compares favourably with the national average.
